6 ways to Reduce Skin Allergies in Dogs

Why Is Your Dog Scratching

Dogs can get skin allergies which are curable but very uncomfortable for our dogs. An allergy can sometimes just happen overnight due to a change in environment or even a new food or treat.

However, there are many ways to get rid of or reduce skin allergies as they occur.

Below are six triggers that could be the reason your dog’s allergies have occurred:

1. Dust is a common cause of skin allergies in dogs

Dust is a common culprit for skin allergies in dogs. When your home accumulates dust, it can lead to skin rashes and irritations in your furry friend. To combat this issue, it's important to maintain a clean environment. Regularly dusting and vacuuming your home will help reduce dust levels.

Additionally, consider investing in high-efficiency air and charcoal filters for your home. These filters not only improve the air quality for you but also help in reducing allergens

2. Keep your dog clean and well-groomed

In order to alleviate skin allergies in dogs, it’s important to groom your dog more often. You can bathe your dog or take her or him to the groomers to assure that his coat is being properly cleaned to remove the allergens. You can even just wipe your pup’s coat down with a damp towel if bathing is too inconvenient. There are also many shampoos and treatments available that are designed to help as well as heal a dog’s skin infection, which occurs commonly in dogs with allergies.

3.  Limit your dog’s outdoor time while you figure out the culprit of the allergy

This is a hard one for some of our dogs, but sometimes an allergy can be developed by insect bites or pollen in the air. Try to avoid letting your dog go outside for excessive amounts of time if your pup’s skin allergy is due to insect bites.  Some dogs can merely lie down on the grass and pick up an allergy. If you can go for quick walks and monitor the outdoor time, this can be effective.

4. Certain foods in your dog’s diet

Some of our pups develop skin rashes that are caused by a hypersensitivity to certain foods. Food allergies can also manifest themselves as skin rashes in dogs.  These foods should be avoided unless instructed differently by your veterinarian. If you recently changed your food, this could be the reason your dog is itching. You might have introduced a new treat or food that can trigger a skin allergy.

5. Antihistamines and fatty acid supplements can help with skin allergies

Treatments such as antihistamines, fatty acid supplements and topical creams can reduce skin irritation and minimize the itchy sensation for your dog. Adding a fatty acid supplement might help relieve your dog’s itchy skin.  Look for some sprays that have aloe, oatmeal as well as some other natural products can help to alleviate the itching. Apple Cider Vinegar can also help relieve and keep the skin allergies away.

6. Consult your veterinarian for a thorough assessment

If your dog's allergies persist or worsen, consult your veterinarian for a thorough assessment. A skin or blood allergy test can help identify specific allergens triggering your dog's reactions. Based on the test results, your veterinarian can prescribe appropriate medications or treatments tailored to your dog's needs. Follow the prescribed treatment regimen diligently for effective allergy management and relief.

By addressing these factors comprehensively, you can help alleviate your dog's skin allergies and improve his or her overall well-being. Regular veterinary check-ups and proactive management are always key to ensuring your furry companion remains healthy and comfortable.
